Why PPC still matters for UK businesses

People use search engines to compare options, solve problems and decide who to contact. That makes paid search especially useful for service businesses: an advert can appear when someone is actively looking for a solution, rather than interrupting them while they are doing something else.

Google's UK Economic Impact report says that two in three UK businesses believe products such as Google Search and Google Ads help them find new customers. The report also estimates that UK goods and services worth £20 billion were exported globally with help from Google Search and Ads. These figures come from a Google-commissioned report, but they illustrate the scale of search as a commercial channel.

The goal, however, is not simply to buy more traffic. It is to attract the right searches, present a credible message and make it easy for the visitor to take the next step.

What does PPC management include?

PPC management is the ongoing process of planning, running, measuring and improving paid advertising campaigns. It includes much more than writing an advert and switching a campaign on.

Campaign strategy and account structure

Every campaign should begin with a commercial goal. That might be generating qualified leads, increasing online sales, promoting a particular service or entering a new market. We consider your audience, geography, buying cycle, margins, budget and existing SEO activity before recommending a campaign structure.

Separate campaigns may be needed for different services, locations, audiences or levels of intent. A clear structure makes it easier to control spend, write relevant adverts and understand which activity is producing results.

Planning a new campaign? Use our Google Ads campaign checklist to review goals, tracking, keywords and landing pages before launch.

Keyword research and search intent

Some searches show immediate buying intent, such as “PPC agency UK” or “Google Ads consultant”. Others are informational, such as “how much does PPC management cost?” Both can be valuable, but they should not be treated in exactly the same way.

We research commercial keywords, local searches, long-tail opportunities, competitor terms and negative keywords. Search-term reviews then help identify irrelevant queries so that budget is not spent on visitors who were never likely to become customers.

Advert copy that earns attention

Your advert is often the first impression a potential customer has of your business. It needs to be specific, credible and closely matched to the page it sends people to. We test meaningful differences in headlines, benefits, calls to action and offers rather than making cosmetic changes without a clear question to answer.

Landing pages that convert

Sending every advert to the homepage is rarely the best approach. A strong landing page reflects the search query, explains the service clearly, provides evidence and makes the next action easy. If clicks are arriving but enquiries are not, the problem may be the page, the offer or the follow-up process rather than the campaign alone.

“A conversion occurs when an ad click or other interaction with your ad leads directly to a behavior that's valuable to you.”

Conversion tracking is the foundation

Clicks and impressions are useful indicators, but they are not business results. Depending on your objectives, a conversion could be a form submission, phone call, consultation booking, product purchase, brochure download or qualified lead entering your CRM.

Accurate tracking helps you see which campaigns, adverts and keywords are producing those actions. It also shows where measurement has limitations, which is important when a sale happens offline or after a longer decision-making process.

  • Define primary conversion actions before launch.
  • Connect website, phone and CRM signals where the available systems allow it.
  • Separate useful enquiries from low-quality activity.
  • Report spend, conversions and qualified outcomes in plain English.

Google Ads, Microsoft Ads and paid social

Google Ads is often the starting point because it captures active search demand, but it is not the only channel worth considering.

Google Ads can reach people searching for a service, product or solution. Microsoft Advertising can provide additional search visibility and may suit particular B2B and professional audiences. Paid social can build awareness, generate demand and re-engage previous visitors. Remarketing can reconnect with people who need more information or reassurance before making contact.

The right mix depends on your audience, economics and capacity to follow up leads. We do not recommend adding platforms simply because they are available.
